Graphic Design of Three Continents
Spectators and artists are often bridged to unseen words, unique works and novel experiences in visual arts through exhibitions held at the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art.
Given the exiting gap between Iran and the rest of the world, which is a direct result of the country’s unique stance, the museum has assumed a significant role in the realm of art. The museum is a window showcasing what is often overlooked or unavailable. Graphic design is one of these rarities.
The Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art has made tremendous effort to present masterpieces by Iranian and foreign graphic designers over the past few years. The Tehran Graphic Design Biennial as well as other exhibitions are the outcome of these endeavors. The exhibitions have been especially invaluable for students in art schools who have thus been able to view the world’s spectacular works in the field. They have also provided them with the opportunity to conduct dialog not only with Iranian designers, but with artists from other countries.
To introduce the most conspicuous pieces of art to the Iranian graphic designers and students, the museum has undertaken to organize a series of exhibitions devoted to works by pioneering and prominent artists world over. In the first of the series, works by an Iranian graphic designer have been juxtaposed with the works by four European and American artists.
The exhibition highlights a broad scope of activities carried out by Morteza Momayez during his artistic career. Almost half a century of relentless efforts in education, founding the society of Graphic Designers, and introducing new perspectives in Iranian graphic design are but a few of the services he has rendered to the art community and have secured a high place and international recognition for him. Other four graphic designers have been selected among his contemporaries.
Morteza Momayez does not need introduction. Neither has he been unknown to anyone involved in Iran’s art arena for the past half century. His works include graphic design, illustration, photography, painting and installation.

The European and American graphic designers whose works have been exhibited are among the most distinguished artists in the word. However, due to space limitations, only a tiny portion of their works are presented here.
Seymuor Chwast is one of the cofounders of “Pushpin Studio” in New York. For many years, Milton Glaser, a leading American graphic designer, and Seymour Chwast have astounded many graphic designers worldwide.
Even though many years have passed, Chwast’s innovative style in producing his posters is still captivating.
Anthon Beeke is a leading figure in contemporary graphic design in the Netherlands. Among hundreds of Beeke’s works, only his human faces are displayed here.
Paula Scher’s works which mostly play with letters may interest Iranian graphic designers at the time when they are engrossed in experimenting with them.
Ahn Sang-Soo, whose uncanny taste invaluable experiences are greatly influenced by the history of her country, belongs to the South Korea’s new generation of artists, in pursuit of its objective to introduce a wide range of graphic designers from around the world, the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art hopes to be able to show works by other artists in future exhibitions.

 Anthon Beeke, The Netherlands
Anthon Beeke (1940) is a graphic designer with clients in Holland and abroad. He has devised exhibitions, furnished museums, designed books, magazines, house styles, logos, postage stamps, catalogues, TV commercials, packaging, children's games, ad campaigns and posters. Most of these designs have won awards one way or another. He has several publications to his name, gives lectures and workshops all over the world, he has been a member of many juries and had many exhibitions. Anthon Beeke has taught at several academies in Holland and abroad, including the Cranbrook Academy of Art, the Rhode Island School of Design and CalArts. As well as being creative director of his own studio in Amsterdam, he is also chief lecturer of the "Man and Information" Department of the Design Academy in Eindhoven.		  
 
 

Seymour Chwast, USA
Seymour Chwast (b.August 18, 1931, New York City) Seymour Chwast is co-founder of Push Pin Studios and has been director of the Pushpin Group where he reintroduced graphic styles and transformed them into a contemporary vocabulary. His designs and illustrations have been used in advertising, animated films, and editorial, corporate, and environmental graphics. He has created over 100 posters and has designed and illustrated more than thirty children’s books. His work has been the subject of three books including, Seymour Chwast: The Left Handed Designer (Abrams, 1985). Many museums, such as the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Library of Congress (Washington D.C.), have collected his posters. He has lectured and exhibited worldwide and is in the Art Directors Hall of Fame. He is the recipient of the 1985 Medal from the American Institute of Graphic Artist.

Ahn Sang-Soo, South Korea
Ahn Sang-Soo has long been one of the most influential designers in East Asia. His typographical development work in his native Korea has almost made him a household name. He can justifiably claim to have master-minded and supervised a revolutionary transition of the traditional Hangul, the Korean alphabet, into a functional medium for today, with all its digital demands and interpretations. Born in Chungju, Korea in 1952, he has enjoyed a long career as a designer and educator. A graduate of Seoul's Hongik University, where he is now a Professor in the College of Fine Arts, his early works in industry served to fire his enthusiasm for visual communication across many disciplines. He has fifteen books on design-related subjects to his credit and copious essays and papers. He holds a number of awards and prizes including a commendation by the Korean Language Academy for meritorious contribution to the advancement of Hangul (he has four major Korean fonts to his credit). As early as 1983, he was selected as Designer of the Year by Design magazine. His list of design achievements, both in Korea and abroad, is indeed comprehensive. It includes the design and production of many major international exhibitions and over forty shows in which his work has featured. He regularly travels abroad to lecture on his projects and to promote Asian design developments and ideas. He is also editor/art director of the underground art-culture magazine Report/Report (1988-present). From 1997 to 2001, Ahn was made Vice President of ICOGRADA, the International Council of Graphic Design Associations. In this role he has been responsible for establishing a number of international workshops and has served on several International Competition juries. In 2000 October, he chaired Icograda's prestigious Millennium Congress 'Oullim 2000' held in Seoul. He also did Icograda Design Education Manifesto project. The event attracted designers from all parts of the world and culminated with the publication of a collaborative graphic design education manifesto for designers in the new century. From 1999, also AGI member. Also in 2001, he organized TypoJanchi, a international typography biennale held in Seoul. Now he stays in Beijing and teaching in CAFA (Central Academy of Fine Arts) one year as a guest professor.		  
 
 

Paula Scher, USA
Paula Scher has been a principal of the distinguished international design consultancy Pentagram since 1991. As an art director in the 1970’s and early 80’s, Scher’s eclectic period-oriented typography for records and books became highly influential. Drawing from what Tom Wolfe called a “big closet” of art and design history, classic and pop iconography, literature, music and film, Scher creates images that speak to contemporary audiences, with emotional impact and appeal. Three decades into her career, these images have come to be visually identified with the cultural life of New York City. Scher has developed identity and branding systems, promotional materials, environmental graphics, packaging and publication designs for a broad range of clients that includes, among others, The New York Times Magazine, Citigroup, Bloomberg L.P., the Asia Society, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Symphony Space, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, the New 42nd Street, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the New York Botanical Garden. In 1996 Scher’s widely imitated identity for the Public Theater won the coveted Beacon Award for integrated corporate design strategy. Her work, including posters for the Public Theater, is represented in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, New York; the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.; the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich; the Denver Art Museum; and the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. Her work is featured in the 2003 National Design Triennial, currently on view at the Cooper-Hewitt. In 1998 she was named to the International Art Directors Club Hall of Fame, and in 2000 she received the prestigious Chrysler Award for Innovation in Design. She has served on the national board of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) and was president of its New York chapter from 1998 to 2000. In 2001 she received the profession’s highest honor, the AIGA Medal, in recognition of her distinguished achievements and contributions to the field, and she was awarded the degree of Doctor of Fine Arts Honoris Causa from the Corcoran College of Art and Design. In 2002 the Public Theater named Scher to its board of trustees. She is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale. Scher has lectured and exhibited all over the world, and her teaching career includes over two decades at the School of Visual Arts, along with positions at the Cooper Union, Yale University and the Tyler School of Art. She has authored numerous articles on design-related subjects for the AIGA Journal of Graphic Design, Print, Graphis, and other publications, and recently Princeton Architectural Press published her career monograph Make It Bigger.
